i’m proud to say the city in which i was born is continuing to put itself in the electronic limelight.
'in germany, they can't say 'techno,' they say 'teshno'' ~ seth troxler [march 2008]
i’m proud to say the city in which i was born is continuing to put itself in the electronic limelight.
a while ago i hosted a teshcast by italian duo life’s track. i came to them through a most excellent release on italian label bosconi. when the boss of said label, fabio della torre, emailed me recently with his imprint’s next release – from cross pollinated house and bass producer altered natives – and informed me he was himself beging to focus on production under his own name once again (having previously released as fabio corcos and one half of minimono) i was keen to hear the results and, long story short, they were impressive, so i hooked him in for a teshcast.
here comes the piece i did for dj mag‘s may issue
no one really wants to get older. that’s especially true in dance music circles where scenes emerge, evolve and grow extinct in a matter of months; where the yoof rule ok. of course, after generations of plying your trade you might be lucky enough to graduate to veteran status, but even then it’s the overground crowd who hail you as their own, with underground heads perennially focussed on the next big thing. with his newly released reform club, however, manchester’s mark stewart aka claro intelecto rather bucks that trend. pairing the same dubbed out sonic invention of all previous full lengths with a musical maturity that comes only with age, it’s his most accomplished work to date.
this new various artists series on bloody mary’s dame music was birthed, far as i can tell, after a collective of producers spent time hanging out in a berlin club as it was refurbished. one of them was the boss herself, another was label associate jozif and the final two are newer members of the dm fam’ in the form of axel bowman and attan: a diverse crew, to be sure, with equally diverse results.
bristol based october is a busy boy of late. amongst releases for never learnt, applepips and skudge, he’s managed to find time to chisel out two more chunky productions for his own fledgling tanstaafl imprint.
being a dance music fan is an inherently fickle pursuit, your favourite artist this month likely won’t be for long. it can be your tastes that change, or their style that matures, but often the convergence of the two happens for only a brief period apart from in the most extreme cases of prolonged excellence… think omar s, andy weatherall etc.
when i’m not listening to techno, reviewing house or arguing over bass music, i like to wear clothes.
he only releases a couple of eps or remixes a year, but german baaz is amongst the finer craftsmen of deep house.
classic records co-boss, musical weirdo and travelling dj luke solomon has just announced his latest project
as well as forever expanding their own brutish back catalogue of loopy analogue techno, skudge continue to showcase the wares of their favourite other producers.
fellow leeds blog types hush house are more grown up than teshno: they throw parties.
i first came across german dj, producer and ki records label boss christian löffler earlier this year upon the release of his aspen ep.
we all know that vocals have come back in a big way in the last year or so. some are better than others, but san fran trio pillow talk are firmly in the former camp thanks to some delightful efforts for life & death, visionquest and wolf & lamb.
roy huschenbeth is yør, young a hamburg based producer with just two eps to his name. both have come on nascent label purple maze and both mine a broken, aged, raw house vein a world away from his city peers like smallville.
here comes another pretty new, vinyl only label with a great name, vibes & pepper, straight outta paris.
so mixmag have started doing this thing whereby a dj/producer of their choice curates ten pages of the mag and mixes the cover cd. the first time they did it was february 2012, with minus boss richie hawtin the man put in charge.
ever wondered what a dj agency actually does, how they work, how they started, who they work with? i have.
i really don’t think anyone will deride will saul for this volte-face regarding his other, housier label, simple.
as you’ll know if you come here often, i’m based in leeds. and if you come here really often you might have even read this, which means you’ll know how happy i am a new venture in leeds is to open which encompasses a record shop, waxwerks, and a club/bar and creative space entitled the garage.
