max graef ~ am fenster ep on tartelet

max graef deals in sample heavy sounds be they house, hip hop, whatever. not only does he release them through his own small but already well appreciated label, box aus holz, but so too does he produce them himself. here he appears on the suitably idiosyncratic tartelet label with three tracks, two of which are alongside collaborators. and they are all winners.

first up in and cahoots with muff deep is ‘am fentser’ is loosely described as deep house and has a far off kick propping up warm smeared synths as fluttering claps seem to float right in the middle. it feels natural, free flowing and makes for a genuinely heart-warming listen: despite sounding nicely dishevelled and ramshackle, there’s nothing haphazard about the way the samples are so carefully stitched together into a greater whole. at first you think next track ‘pink panther’ (the only solo effort here) might turn into a staple kerri chandler-esque wedge of 90s house, but of course it doesn’t – instead the sounds are far less standard and the beats kick a much more original pattern and twists on bursts of garage synths. finally, ‘wrakk’ – made with labuzinski – is a loose and playful concoction of soulfully broken beats, cute samples and spitting snares that shimmers like a hot summer sun and brings you down beautifully. house music never sounded so charming than in graef’s hands.
