andy ash ~ white leaf ep on fly by night

though his discography stretches back to 2008, 2012 seems to have been andy ash’s annus mirabilis. so far this year he’s appeared on the auspicious black key, deep space orchestra’s quality use of weapons imprint and now takes the first release for fly by night music, each of which finds the man who also runs boogie originals honing a sound that’s couched in vintage house aesthetics, scattered with ruff cut samples and lightly dusted with a fuzzy analogue warmth.

‘white leaf’ is an easy to ride, jangly groove that lopes up and down with mechanical flapping snares offset by more liquid and reverb heavy jazz club chords. it’s prickly and ramshackle in its make-up, hiding robotic bleeps behind effervescent male vocals, but maybe loads too much detail into one track making it difficult to really sink into. on the flip, the same track is de-cluttered by moodymanc and plays out a little firmer, a little faster. thin pads make it more future facing but the stomping beat is rather too flat to really excite.

ash’s other original, ‘500 motor’, is a lazy and lethargic cosmic house trudge. kicks come from way down below as sparks of intergalactic energy fly off in all directions. a rattle of jumbled percussion runs right up the middle and the whole thing is glued together with the pads that gently waver in the background. it sounds quite like the multi-layered and wholly raw approach of theo parrish, though never quite nails the same hypnotic groove.
