this friday, september 21st, leeds blog and event crew hush house throw their first party of the term at the garage. headlining and making leeds debuts will be bristol boys october and outboxx, the former of whom has had a milestone year with releases on his own new imprint tanstaafl (read a full interview about this here and review here) as well as on skudge’s label, auspicious young staines imprint never learnt and much more besides. city brethern outboxx, meanhwhile, have continued to release their ebullient brand of deep, textured house music on immerse (reviews here and here) and brstl whilst playing places like fabric in between.
given the cosiness of the new club that is the garage (read about it in full here), with raw unfinished brick walls, exposed wires and generally tight knit vibes it’s sure to be a great party for those in the know. tickets for the event, which runs 11pm – 5am, and is backed up with sets from residents joe were and r cary, can be bought over on ra. to mark the occasion, i snagged october and one half of outboxx to ask them a couple of questions ahead of the party.
first up, outboxx…
how you doing? what’s been keeping you busy recently?
we’re cool. we have just been working on the idle hands double pack and eating saint john and dolly smiths hand made scotch bonnet pickle.
garage is a small, 200(ish) capacity club - will that impact on the records you pick/play? will it change the sound of your set?
it’s all about smaller venues like that as you can tend to feel the vibe of the crowd… we will just see how it feels. we played take 5 cafe in bristol with elgato & billy blanks and that was one of our favourite gigs the crowd were real lively / open minded and it was just a proper party so we really excited to play this one. big venues are cool but the intimate vibe is what we are about!
as there are two of you do you go b2b one each or? how does it work? also do you ever try stiff the other one by leaving them on a tough tune to get out of?!
when we go b2b we normally like to do 3 each then 2 each then 1 each… works well because as the music escalates the quicker switches works well. matt likes to leave me with very little time to mix… that’s his party trick.
and so to october…
how you doing?
i’m doing good! been working a lot with will saul the past few months. we have a joint project coming out on aus in dec. i have also completed my 2nd ep for skudge and i’ve been readying tanstaafl#003. i have also been skating quite a bit…
what are you expecting in leeds?
never played leeds before – i’m really looking forward it as have only heard great things. hopefully it will be a nice and intimate vibe on the night but frankly, i have no idea what to expect…
garage is a small club – will that change the sound of your set?
i don’t know what my set is gonna sound like until i’m there so i couldn’t tell you – however, given the size of the venue i think acid will do the business…
any chance you’ll join outboxx and play as a threesome? i figure you must know them already? is dj tag teaming something you like to do if you can?
not sure, i’m pretty funny about playing with people… even if i know them. guess you’ll have to wait and see on the night!
