the heritage of leeds’ the warehouse is as incredible as it is unquestionable: for almost 34 years has the space been an active hub of electronic entertainment in the city, first for the likes of grandmasterflash and frankie goes to hollywood, then as electronic music took hold for the likes of sasha, nights like vague and back to basics, and now in the modern era is home to many top nights from (still) back to basics, urban slanted parties like eat my beat and abstract as well as old favourites like hard times.
as is usual this time of year, the club has unleashed its autumn line-ups along with some news of additions to the club. first off, the owners have acquired the garage next to the club and have converted it into an extra room with a new bar. so too are their new led installations and tweaks to the already impressive lights and funktion one sound system. everything is set, then, for another fine run of events up until christmas.
you can see a full list of events below, but my picks include back to basics’ 21st birthday on november 3rd. a night as old as house music itself, few have run longer anywhere in the world and few have quite the unity between old heads and new fans that do this one. to mark the special occasion basement jaxx – one of the first acts to play the night back in the 890s – pop by to do a very special dj set, and no doubt many other acts will be announced in the coming weeks.
the return of hard times has also been a hot topic in leeds recently. having forged ahead – also back in the 90s – with pioneering line-ups that featured the likes of us house legends todd terry and lil louis vega for the first time in this country, the night is held in high regard for many, especially given that such classic us house sounds are totally en vogue right now. if you want in, catch kenny dope on 29th september.
two more events i’ll definitely be checking out are both up coming abstract parties on november 10th and december 8th respectively.they feature some quality underground bookings in the form of detroit sleazer jimmy edgar, juke influenced planet mu act machinedrum, apple pips boss appleblim and garage pioneer todd edwards. tasty, for sure…
despite its, name the warehouse is not wholly shabby and raw – instead it’s nice and sizey without being too large, and features a few creature comforts and stylish design elements to make for a night that feels underground yet cosy… perfect.
