olin ~ finally on argot

i’m still grateful to argot for turning me onto the stern and stunning house music of amir alexander with its first release. though keeping things firmly in the city of chicago, the next release offers a different vibe all together from olin – his blissed out, sparse but rolling deep house is sprinkled only suggestively with wavy synth stabs where alexander’s arrangements were much more dense affairs. here, the track’s repeated title is what will ring in your mind long after the final beat, no matter if you hear it early on the way up or late on the way down. it’s a slow burner designed to tease the floor, surely, and tease it certainly does.

it’s the flip ‘tomorrow’s news’ that really stands out, though. there’s a lightness of touch in the soundscapes crafted; from gentle bass pops to feathery hi hats via soft-focus melodic scales, everything acts to sooth. glassy, watery droplets add a little chill to the otherwise warm ambiance until a nagging, retroistic bassline snakes its way through leaving trails of acid rain in its wake. heady and cerebral house, it’s nice to know not everyone in the windy city makes sweaty, jacking beats nor dreamy, dusty love letters to metropolises in the sky. props to argot and olin, then, for setting their own agenda.
