nyra doesn’t fuck about. his beats (on young but quality imprints like never learnt and elastic dreams) are muscular and brutish, yet stripped back to only the most essential of ingredients. at least they have been until now, because the first track on his secretsundaze debut is actually a little more whimsical than recent efforts: as well as the pacey kicks and seriously grainy, purposeful claps which surge along at a lick that suggests they are in a rush to get done, there are thin, lingering synth lines buried in the background. they make for a joint that’s more than just a classy banger, elevating it to a more potent emotional plane. it’s deep house with techno intentions but most refreshingly of all doesn’t just sound like another love letter to detroit or chicago.
‘three form’ is dug out from an even more subterranean rock bed: the sub growls and grumbles and here things are more soupy – the sounds melt into one another – but for the incessant ticking rim shots – and make you feel as if you’re submerged deep inside them rather than listening from afar. dropped snares each bar bring a looseness to the arrangement as circling, scraping synths suggest you’re being watched. thick and occult ambiances add scale to the whole thing and if you hear a deeper, more streamlined techno roller this year, let me know.
for the remix, ever on point dude tobias, still fresh from his recent album for the mighty ostgut ton, breaks things up into arpeggiated lines, rising and falling percussive lines and plenty of deep space moodiness. hypnotic in an unfamiliar way, it’s filled with sonic subtleties that pull you to and fro at the same time as surging on through vast open spaces. following on from flori’s most excellent ‘lucy’ ep, secretsundaze are in a fine vein of form.

[...] chart time again. this week i have mostly been in love with bo saris’ debut tune – ‘she’s on fire’ complete with silkier than silky remix from my all time favourite deebee dude, calibre. the second release on andres’s la vida label also dropped, coming over like a perfect follow up to ‘new 4u’… strings? check. rolling beats? check. a dusty, vintage finish? check. it might even be better than the first. also hot this week is mike huckaby’s bassline 88-89 ep – two molten dancefloor tracks that do more than justice to their names. the old omar s i’ve included was brought back from dope jams for my by a friend, and is both bleary eyed and melancholic and tight and punchy equal measure. andres’s old mate j dilla also makes it in – i can’t believe his dillatroit lp on mahogany music is still availabel to buy, frankly. it’s ganrly, sure, but the beats and soulfulness still tug right at the heart like only a dilla joint does. i’m gunna try not chart things before they are out, but the new chris rau on bearweasel’s never learnt is worth setting up a juno reminder for, let me tell you. finally, if you want to know about the nyra included – cop the review here.
