citizen ~ room service on love fever records

born out of an east london party of the same name, love fever records made quite an entry into the label fray with their debut release from bicep. again shining a light on an upcoming producer, this time it’s madtech aligned londoner citizen who gets the nod. he uses the opportunity to spread his legs through three different styles of well coloured, ebullient house music with a touch of assistance from d-town rebel jimmy edgar. opener “room service” culls hollow metals hits from blawan’s “getting me down” and drops them in between fizzing, frazzled synth lines that crescendo repeatedly as a circular house groove spins below. think bashmore in brash mode and you’re in the right ballpark.

it’s then on “deeper touch” that edgar gets involved, with his brightly coloured and sleazy penchant for sound infusing the whole barely subdued track with a diffuse neon glow. it’s house of a sort, but the sharp and cutting percussion also call to mind many a modern day bass act. back on his own, citizen’s “you give me something” sits somewhere between the two. buffed metallic hues are the backdrop in front of which punchy kicks and bristol bass dive about joyfully, never staying in one place too long. bulbous but not overweight, there’s a catchy skip to citizen’s beats that’ll keep you more than entertained on the dancefloor, whilst his cute synth work suggests more discerning fodder may not be too far off.
