teshcast w ~ youandewan

i’m excited about all new teshcasts, but this is one of the extra special ones. i’ve been after it for ages having first interviewed ewan smith aka youandewan two years ago. since then his profile has grown, even if his online stature has continued to remain laudably reticent. he’s now been licensed to maja jane coles’ dj kicks mix, has remixed gerry read, has continued to play across europe as well as provide regular resident sets for wax: on and system in leeds, and has eps up coming on two essential british labels in 2nd drop and hypercolour to add to outings on skream’s disfigured dubs and defected in the past.

his sound has remained deep, aqueous and bubbly, flitting between emo garage and insular deep house, with the latter of those two the predominate vibe throughout his excellent teshcast w. what’s more, there are four soon-to-be-released youandewan tunes nestled in there somewhere, so keep an ear out because the rest of the tracklist he is keeping to himself. catch the leeds based producer play a huge zoo project festival in kent in september, as well as alongside four tet, levon vincent, ben ufo, giles smith and many more at the big secretsundaze go bang! party on august 26th at pleasure gardens.

you’ve been out a couple of years now. would you say you have found your own sound? are you even looking for one?

no, not particularly. i tend to just make shit that i buzz off initially… then if people feel it then it becomes a nice bonus. i have to really, really like it first…

when making a track do you have an idea or sound sketch in your head, or do you work on a trial and error basis? is the process in any way interesting/important to you or is it just the end product you focus on?

any decent stuff usually comes about by mistake when i’m just pooping about with sounds. eventually – sometimes after all day – something just clicks and you get a loop working. then it’s just a case – for me anyway – of patching it together.

do you aim for your music to be so insular, or is it just the way it comes out?

i’ve not really thought about it. i suppose it mirrors my personality and it just feels normal to me… i’ve never made a ‘big’ tune per se and now, as i get even older, things are more likely to get even more dozy!

what can we expect in your upcoming hypercolour and 2nd drop eps?

deffo a mixture of vibes. it’s been over a year since my disfigured record and during that time i’ve basically been teaching myself some new tricks. these new ones are still on a similar tip though.

heard you got some new speakers recently – how much and in what way did that affect making music for you?

yeah. i’ve not been in the strongest financial position since putting everything on music making. but yeah – actually bought some decent monitors, and it’s changed everything!

about the mix – any specific aim with it or thinking behind it?

it’s basically a bit of upcoming stuff from myself along with various decent records by people i dig.

teshcast w ~ youandewan

ewan is keeping the tracklist to himself for this one, but expect plenty of deep, cuddly house music along with four of his own unreleased jams.
