october ~ planet of minds on tanstaafl

bristol based october is a busy boy of late. amongst releases for never learnt, applepips and skudge, he’s managed to find time to chisel out two more chunky productions for his own fledgling tanstaafl imprint. ‘planet of minds’ is very much a slab of two halves: the first, ‘singularity jump’ finds julian in lively spirits, chucking slinky hi hats into a potent brew of rubberised bass notes, thin, barely audible pads and incendiary vocal snippets. it’s effervescent already at this point, but the arrival of some happy sax notes make it the most simultaneously feel good yet stern house banger you’ll have heard in ages.

the flip is much darker, more subdued and turns in on itself for the duration. as a mildly acidic bassline bleeds out of the speakers, what sound like snapping electric wires fizz and whip about for a brief time before echoing hats expand what you’re hearing into a much larger chamber of devilish reverb. it speaks of post apocalyptic landscapes, micro bacterial life and comes over like the decaying ghost of detroit techno’s past. wholly non-standard and oddly beguiling as ever, this is another great release from a man seemingly full of them.
