savas pascalidis & joel alter ~ white lotus on sweatshop

if you loved jonsson/alter’s mod album from last year, then you’ll like this white lotus ep. though this time alter is paired up with fairly frequent collaborator savas pascalidis on berlin’s sweatshop, his unhurried arrangements, grainy finish and deep, dubbed out grooves still prevail. the opener and title track is an upright, incendiary jam. its icy hi-hat ringlets hang delightfully above ravey chord stabs and the result is something that teeters on the verge of being main room techno like the sort mike dehnert and his fachwerk imprint deal so ably in.

‘bamboo forest’ is next, and the joy of the track is in the way various elements move in the mix. a slinky hi hat, for example, starts buried deep down inside a bouncy rubber kick, but slowly grows louder and moves right into the centre as smeared synthscapes evolve all around. it’s deceptively simple and takes close listing to appreciate, but once you lock in and allow your mind to wander as the music slowly unfolds, unfurls and evolves, it’s a deeply hypnotic experience.

‘quazen groove’ then kicks that bit harder with a certain air of ‘fuck you’. a constant and thin ticking sound suggests techno, but louche drums and the brazen mid tempo kick keep things deliciously deep and house-y for six an a half minutes of rolling back room pleasure. like i say, this is not something that will grab you from a 30 second online clip, but it certainly gets under your skin when you give it the time it deserves.
